What's Happening?

Cambridge International Education has officially announced a major update to how AS & A Level Mathematics will be assessed. Starting September 2027, a brand-new modular syllabus will be available — running alongside the existing linear qualification.

This is one of the most significant changes Cambridge has made in years, and it directly affects students, teachers, and schools around the world.

Linear vs Modular — What's the Difference?

📋 Linear (Current)

  • All exams at the end of the course
  • No flexibility in timing
  • One final assessment window

🔷 Modular (New 2027)

  • Exams split into modules taken at different points
  • Greater flexibility for schools & students
  • Same high academic standards maintained

Key Benefits for Students

More Choice — You now have the freedom to choose a pathway that suits your learning style.

📅 Flexible Timing — Modular exams can be sat at different points — reducing last-minute pressure.

🎯 Same Standards — Whether you take linear or modular, the qualification holds the same academic value.

🌍 Global Recognition — Cambridge qualifications remain among the most respected worldwide.

What About Accounting, Business & Economics?

Cambridge is also actively consulting teachers of AS & A Level Accounting (9706), Business (9609), and Economics (9708) about bringing more flexibility to those syllabuses too.

If you teach any of these subjects, Cambridge has specifically requested your feedback through a short survey (10–15 minutes). Your input will directly shape future changes to these qualifications.
